This fourth part of the education series begins to delve deeper into Visa Stand-in Processing (STIP). There is so much within this service that it needs a few articles to cover it.
Concept
STIP (Stand-In Processing) is Visa's service that steps in to authorize or decline transactions when the issuer's host system is unavailable or too slow to respond within the ATR time limit. STIP makes decisions on behalf of the issuer based on pre-configured parameters and risk controls.
STIP scenarios
STIP activates in several scenarios: when the issuer host is completely unavailable, when response times exceed ATR limits, or when configured to handle certain transaction types. Understanding these scenarios is essential for issuers to manage their STIP configurations effectively.
General STIP services for processing
STIP provides multiple services including PIN verification (where Visa validates PIN on behalf of the issuer), CVV verification, CAM (Card Authentication Method), CAVV (Cardholder Authentication Verification Value) validation, and ASAF (Account Status Advice File) — each playing a critical role in authorizing transactions when the issuer is unavailable.
