STIP Risk Tools

Welcome to part 3 of the STIP Mega Guide. STIP operations are outside the issuer's direct control, so it is important that VisaNet provides services to help clients manage risk as much as possible. This article highlights several key tools used within Visa to support risk control.
Visa Advanced Authorization (VAA)
Visa Advanced Authorization is Visa's real-time risk scoring service. VAA analyzes each transaction and provides the issuer with a risk score, enabling more informed authorization decisions. The score considers hundreds of data points including transaction patterns, merchant behavior, and cardholder history.
Visa Advanced Authorization STIP (VAA STIP)
VAA STIP extends the power of VAA into stand-in processing. When STIP takes over because the issuer is unavailable, VAA STIP uses the VAA risk score to make a more intelligent stand-in decision, helping to decline high-risk transactions even during STIP without excessive impact on legitimate cardholders.
Visa Risk Manager (VRM)
Visa Risk Manager is a rules-based fraud management tool that allows issuers to configure real-time rules to detect and decline potentially fraudulent transactions. Within STIP, VRM rules can be applied to stand-in decisions, giving issuers an additional layer of fraud control even when their host system is offline.
